Gay Marriage
This was written in a blog that I regularly read:
Freedom to Marry Day
By the way, tomorrow (Thursday) is Freedom to Marry Day. The LGBTA will be performing mock weddings on the drillfield at 3:30. There's a straight couple, a gay couple, and a lesbian couple. Expect the gay and lesbian ceremonies to be just as ordinary and mundane as the straight ceremony. Also, stop by the table in front of McBryde just about any time tomorrow to sign a petition supporting equal marriage rights.

The general feeling I'm getting is that gay and lesbian couples, that is, the people this issue directly concerns, are very enthusiastic about it. Meanwhile, there's a lot of straight people, whom the issue does not concern, who are very upset. What's the big deal? If two people want to get married, let them get married. It's not like allowing gay marriage will cause disease or widespread panic or death and destruction. And if you're afraid it will cheapen the sacred institution of straight marriage, it won't unless you choose to let it. If you have religious arguments against gay marriage, the intent is not to interfere with marriage as a religious institution.

The drive behind gay marriage is to extend to homosexual couple the same rights conferred upon heterosexual couples, like succession of estate, medical power of attorney, joint tax filing, etc. Also, this is another push for acceptance, a push to make people see that there is only one thing different/strange/abnormal/whatever about homosexuals compared to heterosexuals: they're attracted to members of the same sex. That's it. That is the only difference. It shouldn't be this big a deal to extend to them the rights afforded to heterosexuals. They're plain old ordinary people.

Live and let live, already.

My response:
You like a lot of people have misunderstood the argument against gay marriage. First I will say that I am not a gay basher and I have a good number of gay friends. That being said gay people aren't, or shouldn't be portrayed as the subject of this argument. The argument is over marriage. Marriage is something that was established a long time before this country was even an idea. And it was defined as a spiritual/legal union between a man and a woman. That's what it is, that's what it always has been. Marriage is not an attack on a certain group of people. It's an institution with a fairly simple definition that has evolved over thousands of years. Two plus two equals four. Two plus two does not equal five just because somebody wants it to. Two plus two does not equal three just because somebody wants it to.
If we're going to come along and say that marriage can be anything that two people who want to get together say it's going to be, then marriage can be between people of the same sex, could be between three people, could be between four people, where does this stuff stop? This push for gay marriage isn't a civil rights case, it's an out and out perversion of one of the basic institutions this country was founded on. There can be laws made to handle succesion of estate and joint tax filing. That's what voting and representation is for. But misrepresenting or perverting what marriage actually is is not a solution. It is an attack on Judeo-Christian(and Muslim I might add) values.
In my opinion it is the homosexuals who need to live and let live.

Weekend
Well it's update time. This past weekend was fun but kinda disapointing. I'll start on Thursday I guess. Improv was really cool. A lot better than the week before. The guys really started to "get it". I had them playing a game called Thank You and another one called It's Tuesday which got them in the mood to do some actual improv instead of just telling stupid jokes. The week before Improv was horrible! Bryan had started them early for some reason and by the time I got there they had been playing for an hour and just had no energy at all. Now when I say energy I mean creative energy, they didn't want to listen or actually do something creative besides make smartass jokes or make dick and fart jokes. The thing with this group is that they resort to sex jokes waay to quickly instead of actually trying to be creative or actually act. The night Bryan started it I'm not sure what kind of warmups he did but by the time I got there they weren't in any mood to improvise. They were just sitting around looking for a chance to say "penis..hehe". Warmups are supposed to get you in the mood to create a scene and be creative. Last week they got into that mood and actually made the games we played fun and interesting. I hope we can get back into that this week too because it was a lot of fun. I think the time may be right to bring in the status work and maybe talk about spontineity and such. I hope Sprout doesn't come back though. He really has no idea what he's doing and just stifles the other people that he's up there with.

So anyway Improv went fine and I got home late after spending some time with Kate. Then I had to get up early to get ready for the weekend and go to work. I managed to get out the door without forgetting anything which was cool. I got to work and did some streaming work and got everything sort of under control. Then I realized that I was supposed to shoot that comercial that afternoon which was not good timing. I was exhausted and just wanted to chill. I took Kate out for lunch because I wouldn't be there on Valentines. We went to India Garden and then back to her place where I grabbed a powernap. Then I went back to the studio and had to do the shoot. They made me sing the 'blues'. And they didn't give me anything to sing they told me to make something up and sing it in the blues style. Then I made up some words and tried to sing them like they told me to. But then they said 'no' if you were singing the blues you'd sing it like this...... So that wasn't all that fun but I got it done. Then I picked up Jen and we headed to NC. When we finally got there everyone was hanging out and drinking etc. When we finally got to sleep I was in the same room as Vlad who snores like a freight train. Didn't get much sleep. Then the next day we got to the event. It was nice to see everyone and make some new friends. Vlad entered the rapier tourney and made it to the finals. I was really impressed with that. The field was muddy and they took forever to get the fighting started and kept telling us to be ready so things could go quickly.... then they would lecture again on something else. By the time the tourney actually got started it was rainy and miserable. But I wanted to fight and so did the 78 other fighters there. But it was not very well organized and we spent most of the time standing around. The tourney was supposed to go five rounds but because it was getting muddy and rainy they shortend it to 3. which means I got there at 10:30 - 11 ish and waited around for hours until it started and then only got to fight three times. I did get to bearpit for a little while though and I found out that I have hit a ceiling. I can beat most beginners or sub yellow scarves pretty easily. But if I face anyone who is anybody I die extremely quickly. I don't know what to do about that yet. I think I may take Vlad's advice and be more aggressive. There's a loaner dagger with the stuff I may start using that more and saving the cane for melee. Anyway when it was all over we went back to the hotel to freshen up and then head out to eat. Well we couldn't go where we wanted to because they were full and it was Valentines night. So we went to a small chinese place that was pretty cool. Although the staff was about to close up when we got there. Then we went back to the hotel and soaked in the hottub for a while then we went back to the room. We did some drinking when we got back to the room. I tried a little bit of everything. Sarah gave me a little bit of the Chambord stuff that she likes. I really liked the way it tasted. And Ragnar had this stuff that tasted better than bailey's. I had to keep that stuff away from me because I would get messed up on it. I didn't get drunk at all but it did make me sleepy. I slept like a log that night. We were going to get up and go to the practice on Sunday but ended up not going. Sharon who had ridden down with Troy and Sarah had to be home by six. Troy was not happy about leaving so early and not going to practice. I thought about going but I wasn't really in the mood to fight. And we heard about a snow storm coming on the radio so we just headed for home. Well we got to fancy gap/Mt Airey before it started snowing. But when it started it came hard. I couldn't see very far ahead of me and the road was completely covered. On top of that my wipers weren't doing very good. Ice kept freezing on them making them smear and hard for me to see. It took about three hours to go a distance that should have taken one hour. And I was exhausted afterwards because it was intense very involved driving. I went over to Kates and chilled for a while. I really missed her and wished that she could have come. Vlad asked after her too, and said that we go really good together which I think is true. She's very fun to be around and interacting with her is effortless and a joy. Unlike other relationships I've had. Actually all of my other relationships have pushed my patience to the limit. So far the worst thing I've had to do with Kate was follow her into Victoria's Secret and endure stares. And that was kinda fun anyway. But anyway I made it back to Blacksburg and called home to see what the country roads were like and Mom and Dad said to stay away. So Kate and I watched Star Wars and went to bed ;).

Well that was my weekend. Like I said I had fun seeing everyone but the event was disapointing and the ride home was horrible. I want this week to be relaxed but it probably won't be. Oh well I'll have fun anyway I'm sure.
